Podcasts
Do you enjoy listening to podcasts? Have you ever stopped to think about the benefits that podcasts offer their listeners? Creating podcasts is now easier than ever, with many different platforms to choose from. If you're ready to try your hand at creating and sharing a podcast, this post will cover several platforms that you might want to consider. The three platforms that I researched for this post were Soundcloud, Audioboom, and Podbean.
In starting the research for this blog post, I was wanting to know more about the origins of the podcast. In my research, I discovered that a former MTV video anchor, worked with a app developer to create a way to download internet radio to an iPod in 2004. Several other app developers continued to work on the possibilities of downloading and streaming internet radio. It was from this work that the concept of a podcast was created. Audioboom looks to be a good option to consider in uploading and housing a podcast. Audioboom requires a subscription but the prices are reasonable, starting at under ten dollars a month. Unless you are wanting to take your podcast to a more full time level, this basic package would be a good place to start. Audioboom has created many suggestions on the creation and development of your podcast. It seems to be user friendly and offers an easy uploading process. While Audioboom has a lot of good things going for it, I would not recommend this platform for teachers and their students. I would think that teachers and their students would need a more flexible platform that doesn't require a monthly subscription, one that podcasts can be created when desired.

PodBean is a good option for those new to creating and uploading a podcast. It offers up to 5 hours of podcasting for free. Students and teachers with google accounts will be able to easily sign up for an account and be ready to start uploading right away. It also offers an IOS app, which allows its users an additional way to create and record a podcast. PodBean is my favorite choice of these three. Having never created a podcast before, it was a simple process to upload my first podcast. If you find that you are creating more than 5 hours of podcasting, an annual subscription is only ten dollars.
The 5 hours for free offered by PodBean, and the ability to record podcasts on the go with the IOS app, makes it hands down my favorite choice of these three platforms.

Soundcloud

Soundcloud is another option in housing and uploading a podcast. It also offers an easy sign up option with google accounts. You are able to upload up to 180 minutes for free, after that the prices are still reasonable. Upgrading your subscription will offer you many more options to assure that your podcast is at a more professional level. Soundcloud offers an IOS app, but it isn't designed to create and upload podcasts. The app is used for listening to music and podcasts instead. Soundcloud seems to be a good option, but not having an app option to create on the go podcasts is another limitation of Soundcloud.
On the topic of listening to podcasts, if you haven't had a chance to listen to these three, you may want to give them try. The publishing company Heinemann offers a great collection of podcasts on reading and writing instructional practices, and many more topics that you may find useful as an educator.

If you enjoy listening to stories, and add to that the stories are told in 6 minutes, you might enjoy this series of podcasts.

Check out my podcast on podcasts by following the link below the techTalks icon.
Creating podcasts has so many possibilities in both the library and in classrooms. Offering to sponsor a podcast club, or offering a makerspace on creating podcasts could be a good way for a librarian to help to encourage students and teachers to create their own podcasts. I plan to share the link to my podcast with my fellow teachers, and then to offer some techTalks on creating podcasts for and with their students. One challenge in implementing podcasts with the students will be that the podcasts will need to be recorded in quiet work spaces. If you are able to offer opportunities for the teachers and students to learn more about creating them, it shouldn't be too much of a challenge to create podcasts.

I like that you included research into your blog post. It is very interesting how people can turn down a podcast only because they think it is not worthy like a concrete copy.Very simple details on the tools which were great and a very informative podcast.
ReplyDeleteThanks for offering up some podcasts you think are worth a listen. I've never really listened to podcasts, but I like the idea of finding professional tips from them. Podbean was also my favorite site. I think it's great they have an app where users can actually create posts. I also like that you thought about the difficulty of finding a quiet workspace where students could record their podcasts. That was something that hadn't occurred to me.
